Blogging — especially with an SEO friendly blog post — is a fantastic way to attract new customers to your website. But how do you customers or potential customers know where to find your blog? Since most people use a Google search to find what they are looking for online, your site needs to show up high on the list of Google search results — preferably on the first page. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art and science of making your site more visible on Google. That means you need to write SEO friendly blog posts to keep a constant stream of fresh content visible to Google searchers.

The technical aspects of search engine optimization can get complicated, but it all boils down to two essential things:

  • Your post must appeal to your target audience, and
  • You must send signals to Google that show what your post is about.

Both of these are essential for good SEO. That’s because the Google search algorithms pay attention to both. The more that people choose, read, engage with, and share your posts, the higher the posts will move up on search result pages. By itself, that’s not enough, though. Google must also understand what your post is about so that it can accurately match it with search users’ queries. We’ll talk about both of these below.

You could just sit down and start typing whatever is on your mind, but your results will be far better if you plan. When writing an SEO friendly blog post, first, ask yourself these crucial questions:

  • What is the intended audience for this post?
  • Why are they reading this post? What do they want to know?
  • What would I like them to do after they finish reading the post?

The answers to these questions should guide the content that you write. Then keep your posts focused on a single subject, which makes it easier for the Google algorithms to understand what they’re about.

What Is a Good Keyword Phrase?

The days of keyword stuffing, where people tried to fit as many keywords into their content as possible, are long over. Google, in fact, will penalize you for awkwardly written posts. Keywords still matter, though, because they are the best way to show Google the subject of your post.

The ideal keywords are relatively popular search terms where you have relatively little competition from other companies. For example, “cars” is a popular search term for people who are shopping for new autos, but many other companies, including the largest companies, will already be filling up pages of Google search results on that term. It will be hard for you to break into that pack. On the other hand, the keyword phrase “cars in Arizona with stripes that look like a zebra but are painted orange” will have a lot less competition from other companies but few people will ever search on that term.

How to Choose Keywords

The trick, then, is to find keyword phrases that are not too common but not too unpopular either. There are programs you can use that precisely measure the popularity and competitiveness of keyword phrases, but you can also find keywords on your own by following these steps:

  1. Think about your intended audience that you identified in the planning stage. Imagine they were searching for the information that will be in your post. What keyword phrases would they use to search for that information? Go beyond the first few phrases that come to mind, and include some phrases that are less obvious but that people might be likely to use as search terms. Make a list.
  2. Try a Google search for each phrase on your list. Look at the companies that come up in the results. Are these huge companies with marketing budgets far larger than yours? Or are most of the companies peers?
  3. Consider the total number of results each search brings up. You will probably get many results for almost any search, but some searches may have billions of results while others will have only tens of thousands.
  4. Select keyword phrases that have the best balance of a good number of results and a relatively low level of competition. Select a few phrases, and choose one as your main keyword phrase.

Where to Use Keyword Phrases in Your Blog Posts

It’s important to put your keywords in places where Google expects to find them.  Put your main keyword:

  • Within the first 60 characters of your post’s title, and
  • Within a header, and
  • Within the URL of your seo friendly blog post, if possible

Then use the main keyword, as well as your other keywords, throughout the text but only in places where they fit naturally. Don’t force anything! 

Search engine optimization can get a lot more technical, but following the simple steps above should be a great start to writing an SEO friendly blog post and attracting the new customers your business needs to thrive.
