Google Indexing: How to Rank Faster

Indexing is the first step in the SEO ranking process, which makes it crucial to boosting your online visibility. 

Contrary to what many believe, crawling isn’t a completely passive process. There are some quick, easy tips you can implement to get your pages discovered faster.

We’ve already covered in a previous post what web indexing is and explained how you can check if your site is getting crawled. 

In today’s guide, we’ll share with you the best 8 tips you can apply to get your web pages indexed faster by Google:

1- Create a Sitemap

A sitemap is an XML file that contains links to all the pages on your website. It’s the roadmap that helps search engines discover and navigate all your pages, including newly published content.

There are various techniques to create a sitemap and host it on your website:

For WordPress users:

Installing a plugin like Yoast SEO or Google XML Sitemaps is the easy way. Once activated, the plugin will generate the file for you and update it automatically whenever a new page is published.


If you’re using a different content management system, there are third-party tools to generate sitemaps. For example, you can use sites like XML-Sitemaps or SureOak’s Sitemap Generator.

The only downside to this approach is the auto-update functionally that’s often missing. So, you must check your sitemap regularly to make sure it’s adding your latest pages to the file.


Now that you’re done generating the file, it’s time to submit it to Google Search Console. 

To do that, go to your Google Search Console dashboard, then click on Index > Sitemaps from the left sidebar.

Enter your sitemap file URL (preferably sitemap.xml), hit submit, and you’re done!

2- Publish Fresh Content

Publishing new content consistently is an excellent way to keep crawlers coming back to your website. It’s also essential to improving your backlink profile and building strong relationships with high-authority websites. 

But here’s the thing…

You must keep in mind that Google’s first motivation is to put quality content at the top. So if your newly published posts aren’t valuable, they won’t be a priority to crawling spiders. Which is while some content may take longer to be indexed.

The most efficient way to share new content on your website is through a blog section. You can use it to share highly informative articles with your audience that Google will also love.

You can actually post your first article today!

3- Optimize Your Robots.txt File

Robots.txt, also known as the robots exclusion standard, is a user-generated file that tells crawling bots how to behave on a website. It allows you to limit crawlers from accessing low-quality pages and keep them from getting indexed.

A great solution, right?

Of course… Unless when it starts causing crawl errors.  

An incorrectly coded robots.txt file may disallow crawlers from accessing important pages. And in some cases, it’s your best, most recent content that isn’t getting discovered.

So, make sure your file doesn’t have any unnecessary crawl blocks. You can do that by checking it in your file manager to look for a code like this:

User-agent: Googlebot

Disallow: /

If you find it, simply removing it will solve your problem.

The truth is:

Google doesn’t only crawl web pages with strong backlinks. You can get any article on your blog discovered even if it has no links pointing to it.

But the key term here is “faster indexation”.

High-traffic sites often have a high domain authority due to their strong backlink profile. Which means that they’re getting thousands of quality links pointing to their different pages and bringing dozens of crawling spiders every day.

So, naturally…

A company that gets featured on such authoritative websites will gain more visibility and ranking power quickly. That’s why it’s always important to build quality backlinks for faster, more efficient indexing.

5- Leverage Internal Linking 

Google bots start crawling websites from a single URL then continue by moving to other pages. Yet, to do that, those spiders need more links between pages to tell them where to go next.

By developing a smart internal linking strategy, you’ll ensure that your newest pages will be discovered as soon as they’re online.

For example, you can:

  • Use navigation menus (header, sidebar, footer, etc) leading to your most important site pages
  • Create a blog section for your business website, then interlink all your posts together based on relevance
  • Add a “related articles” section to your post pages to incite crawlers to visit more pages before leaving
  • Check to see if you have any orphan pages (with no internal links coming to them) then create some relevant links leading to them


Do not use nofollow tags on internal links as that may leave some of your pages out of the crawling loop.

6- Remove Noindex Tags

A noindex tag tells Google bots that the page they’re visiting should not be indexed. Which in some cases, can be of great value to your SEO as that helps you avoid duplicate content.

But most often, using noindex tags by mistake is the reason some content never gets discovered.

Thankfully, the solution here is simple:

All you need to do is check for noindex tags or canonical tags in your pages. Look inside the <head> tag for meta tags like this:

  • <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,follow” />
  • <meta name=”googlebot” content=”noindex”>

Then simply remove the code from the file.

7- Block Low Quality Pages

Did you know websites have a limited crawl budget?

According to Google:

When your site is new, a single crawler can be enough to discover all pages and add them to Google’s index. But as your pages multiply, the process might get a bit limited and require more Googlebots and time to complete.


Low-quality content can cause a problem when it enters into direct competition with your best pages. That’s why it’s crucial to optimize your crawl budget to focus on the most important sections of your website. 

To stop outdated, low-quality pages from being indexed, you can:

  • Block pages through your robots.txt file
  • Add noindex tags to your low priority pages
  • Set up 301 redirects
  • Delete pages completely (if they add no value to search engines or your audience)

8- Engage Social Media

One way social media marketing can help SEO is through faster crawling and indexing.


Popular social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn are crawled regularly by Google looking for valuable posts to add to the SERPs. 

For example, Google indexes popular Tweets and displays them instantaneously when searched by keyword.
